Yu-Gi-Oh GX is my favorite anime series and maybe my favorite anime in general. As I used to be a Yu-Gi-Oh kid, collecting the cards, carrying them around with me and sorting them as well as reading the manga and watching the anime I do have a lot of fondness and nostalgia for Yugioh (I still dabble with the cards). But my love for Yu-Gi-Oh GX goes way further than just nostalgia.

So to quickly recap all you non Yu-Gi-Oh heads, GX (GENERATION X!!!) takes place at Duel Academy! A whole academy dedicated to teaching the important art of Duel Monsters. Here we follow SLACKER Judai Yuki (featured on the front cover in a red jacket) and his pals as they duel against each other and fight other wordly forces set out to destroy and offset the balance of the light and dark in the universe.

I love how the series escalates with each season, where the first season is carefree and low stakes even in the bigger climaxes, the two seasons following start to ramp up making the danger more real. Leading to the last season where the main character starts feeling the immense pressure of the responsibility he's been trying to ignore for 3 seasons, wishing to close himself off to both not cause any more damage to other people but also not having to have the responsibility of his friends getting hurt on him. In this last season we also get to see all the characters, who've just been studying at this Duel Academy forced to think of the future. It all gets very real and it ends with this really bitter sweet melancholic ending, I'll get back to that.

But I would say the main reason is the characters, the show has tons of really fun characters that have their own interesting arcs. There's also just interesting drama in the show. Like Sho Marufuji (Syrus) with such debilitating low self esteem he actually offers himself to die as a sacrifice, thinking he's better off dying, but through his friendship with Judai he starts gaining confidence, being able to stand up against his overbearing brother. Or Edo Phoenix, being manipulated and used by the mentors in his life who fills the role of his father that he lost as a kid, having the anxiety that he's not grown or chance at all sense the death of his father, being the same naive kid.

I would say my favorite character and arc in the show is Jun Manjome (featured on the cover), who starts off as the cliche antagonist rival of the series, much like Seto Kaiba in the original Yu-Gi-Oh. A traditional rich kid that disses the main character looking down on him but ultimately losing, becoming disgraced and leaving the duel academy. But we quickly get to find out that this exterior really isn't him and is just a consequence of his very overbearing rich brothers who have the high goal of world domination. But after he lets this go, basically cutting all ties with them and actually having to work himself up for himself we get to see that he's really just a goof ball. I think this is just a very fun twist, he goes from being Seto Kaiba part 2, to someone actually sympathetic who starts working for himself. He even becomes relatable in the last season, where he realizes without the help of his rich brothers he will have to get out in the real world on the equal playing field as everyone else and he starts doubting himself questioning if he's even good enough.

In alot of ways its sort of a dumb childish series, you have to have a sertain level of suspension of disbelief but when you have it and open your eyes and just let yourself allow this world where a card game will decide the faith of the whole world, its just a wonder full series. To get back to that ending, I won't spoil it exactly for those who were motivated to watch the anime from reading this (please hit me up if you do), but I will say while it is bittersweet, it is comforting. As someone with a big fear of things ending, having this sadness about letting things go, the ending of GX feels like a big affirmation that things can be okay.

Thank you for reading this, I would like to introduce you to my brand new album Dualists In Love, out everywhere now.
